Need to Know Module

WWN offers a way to automate critically important decisions regarding "need-to-know", decisions that should be required before users or their software processes obtain access to sensitive, private, or classified information. Too often today, organizations allow access based solely on user roles - a method both imprecise and insecure. Role based security is highly vulnerable to insider fraud and abuse. Yet, the volume and dynamic nature of big data prevent manual "need-to-know" decisions. For a better future, automatic security protection must be applied to sensitive data. WWN provides that automation coupled with the security of encryption.

WWN recommends employing a "Need to Know Module" (NKM) that computes access decisions by applying community approved algorithms to encrypted, sensitive data. Because the NKM views only encrypted data and does not have access to the encryption key, the NKM cannot compromise security as can easily happen if data are centrally processed without encryption. The NKM is an automated agent unable to view clear data so we frequently refer to it as the "Blind Agent".

Community acceptance is essential when deploying a secure but nevertheless synoptic data service. Without community cooperation, essential information will be hoarded in separate compartments and unavailable for the shared enterprise mission. Software from WWN unites the NKM with business process rules that simultaneously support local control over data and global access decisions pertaining to "need-to-know". Thus, we prepare the way forward towards a productive yet secure data-driven infrastructure for sensitive data.
